When it’s close to the end of the quarter, you would probably like to close the objectives you’ve been working on for the past 3 months. Closing an objective gives you a chance to review the work done, look at the progress, and finally, grade the objectives to declare if you’ve achieved the goal or how far were you from achieving it.

In OKRs for Jira, you can close all child objectives and their KRs when closing the parent objective, so it may be a good idea to start from the top one that belongs to you.

  1. Open the objective’s page you’d like to close.

  2. Click on the three-dots menu located on the right side of the screen and choose “Close”.

  3. Choose the final status of the objective. You can change from 3 statuses made for closed goals or leave one of the standard ones. This status will also be applied to the unclosed child objectives and KRs.

  4. Write a short description of how did the work on this objective go, why was it successful, what was missing, what was the reason for failure.

This description will be applied to this objective only. You can edit the descriptions of final updates for all of the child objectives and KRs later.

  5. Grade the objective you’re closing and its children.
Grading happens on a 0-1 scale, where you assess how well did the work go. Typically it’s 0 for nothing done at all, 0.3- 0.5 for something small achieved, 0.6-0.9 for almost reaching the target value, and 1 for completing the goal. We suggest the grade based on the progress, but you may have a scale of your own, so the value can be changed.
